FIA Cybercrime Wing Granted Authority to Address Social Media Offenses
New Notification Grants FIA Power Over Cybercrimes
On Wednesday, the Ministry of IT issued a notification officially granting the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing the authority to take action against crimes committed on social media platforms. This move comes as part of an effort to strengthen the enforcement of laws related to cybercrimes and online offenses.
Transfer of Powers from National Cybercrimes Agency
The notification also revealed that the rules of the National Cybercrimes and Investigation Agency, which was established in 2023, have been annulled. Its powers and responsibilities have now been transferred to the FIA Cybercrime Wing, which will oversee and manage all operations related to cybercrime and online misconduct.
Amendment of PECA to Combat False Information
The Pakistani government is also taking steps to tackle the spread of false information and fearmongering on social media platforms. A proposed amendment to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) will impose stricter penalties, including imprisonment and fines, for those who engage in online activities that target national institutions, individuals, or spread fear.
Proposal for Digital Rights Protection Authority (DRPA)
To further regulate content on social media, a draft proposal suggests the creation of a Digital Rights Protection Authority (DRPA). This authority will be empowered to block or remove content that violates Pakistan’s laws or spreads hatred, particularly content that targets law enforcement agencies or state institutions.
Strengthened Oversight of Online Content
Under the new amendments to PECA, the DRPA will have the authority to issue orders for the removal of harmful content. This includes content that promotes hostility towards the state of Pakistan or its institutions, ensuring that digital platforms remain in line with national security and public welfare objectives.
This new framework aims to enhance Pakistan’s control over online activities and safeguard its citizens and institutions from harmful digital content.
