HarmonyOS NEXT Can Run Android Apps Despite No Android Code
Huawei’s recently unveiled HarmonyOS NEXT, the company’s latest operating system, has attracted significant attention for its focus on native app support and its complete departure from Android code. However, a surprising discovery has revealed that the system can still run Android applications.
Android Emulator “EasyAbroad” Enables Android App Access
Despite HarmonyOS NEXT being built on its own foundation, including the Harmony kernel, Cangjie programming language, and Pangu AI model, the system appears to offer a workaround for users who need access to Android apps. A beta tester recently shared on Reddit that an Android emulator called “EasyAbroad” exists within Huawei’s AppGallery, the official app store for HarmonyOS.
“EasyAbroad” was created to help Huawei device users outside of China access Google Mobile Services (GMS), which are typically unavailable on HarmonyOS devices. The emulator includes a dedicated app store, enabling users to install various Android apps, including popular services like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Disney Plus, and Netflix (in SD quality).
Features and Limitations of the Emulator
The “EasyAbroad” emulator appears as a separate folder on the device’s home screen, with users unable to directly place individual app icons on the main home screen. This emulator allows for easy access to Android apps, but some limitations exist. Users may face challenges such as delayed notifications and alerts from these apps, potentially affecting the overall user experience.

The inclusion of the “EasyAbroad” emulator within HarmonyOS NEXT demonstrates Huawei’s commitment to providing its users with greater flexibility and access to a wide range of applications.
